Legato Dress

Legato comes from the Italian legare, to tie, to bind. It asks the singer to carry every note into the next without a breath between them, one line with no seams. This gown is that instruction made in silk. The band at the throat, the knot beneath it, and the folded panel sweeping across the bust are not separate pieces meeting; they read as one unbroken line of charmeuse, tied once at the collarbone and carried down across the body in a single breath. The knot is the only articulation, the point where the line binds to itself before flowing on. Below it the dress stays legato all the way down: a close column through the waist and hip, a diagonal seam turning the fabric on the bias, and a hem that opens softly at the floor like the last note released. Behind, the line lets go entirely, the back left bare beneath the collar. One phrase, tied at the throat, sung without a breath. In aqua.
