The name came before the first dress. We were looking for a word for living a good life, and we looked in two places: Japanese, for the way it names states of mind in a single word, and French, for the way its words carry ease and elegance. Satorien is what came out of both.
Satori (悟り) is a Japanese word for awakening. It is the moment something becomes clear, when the noise falls away and you see what is true. En (縁) is connection. In Japanese it means the bond between people, and the fate that brings them together at all. Joined, the two words describe a way of living: with clarity about what matters, shaped by the people who share it with you.
Said aloud, sa-to-ri-en, the name falls into the sound of French. The ending reads the way Parisien does. That was deliberate. The idea is Japanese, the manner is French, and the house is American.
It is also how we think about what we make. A dress should give you clarity, in how you look and in how you feel, so that nothing about it is on your mind. And it is for the occasions that bring people together: the first dance, the long table, the night you will be asked about later. Clarity and connection. That is the name, and that is the brief.
