Arpeggio Dress

An arpeggio takes a chord and refuses to sound it all at once: the notes are played one after another, climbing string by string, the way a hand crosses a harp. The word itself comes from arpa, the harp, and this gown carries its harp on the back. Across the open back, fine cords of charmeuse are laced rung over rung, a course of strings drawn across bare skin, tied low and left to fall in long trailing ends. Everything in front prepares that reveal. The neckline sits calm and nearly square, a folded drape crossing the bust on the diagonal, the fabric gathered at one side of the waist so the surface ripples like a run of notes before settling into a clean column to the floor. Over one shoulder, a soft sash wraps the back of the neck and spills down the front in a single long fall. Seen from the front, the dress is the chord, composed and whole.
